TIL in the ‘30s Soichi Sakamoto, 6th grade teacher in Maui, developed H.I. interval training for competitive swimming. Soichi had no experience as a swimmer & coach. He used irrigation ditches to train. A number of his pupils medaled in the Olympics, and many of his training methods are used today.

TIL: In 1976, 17 times world champion swimmer Shavarsh Karapetyan heard a bus crash into a lake during a run. He dived to the bottom of the lake to save 30 people, himself suffering inflammation of the lungs, blood poisoning and extreme nervous exhaustion. The USSR didnt recognize the act until 1982

TIL of the fish kick, a technique in swimming where the swimmer turns sideways and mimics the motion of an eel. It is arguably the fastest way to swim and was once famously used in the 2000 Olympics by Misty Hyman to win the 200m butterfly. However, this kick is rarely used owing to its difficulty.
