TIL For production of ‘The Bellboy ‘ (1960) Jerry Lewis was actor and director, so he invented a system of multiple cameras and monitors enabling him to act, review the performance, and reshoot immediately. Lewis received the Golden Light Technical Achievement award for the invention.

TIL in 1989 a Soviet pilot ejected from a Mig-23 fighter jet over Poland after experiencing technical problems. The jet continued to fly on autopilot for 600 miles before running out of fuel and crashing into a house in Belgium, killing its occupant.

TIL- The entire Toy Story 2 movie was almost lost while a routine file cleanup on Pixar’s internal servers. But the movies was saved because of technical director Galyn Susman who was working from home at the time to take care of her newborn, and had nearly all of the assets backed up on her laptop.

TIL When Jimmy Hendrix played Woodstock, he had a clause in his contract that no acts could play after him. Due to some scheduling and technical issues, he didn’t play until 9am Monday. By that time most people had gone home and missed his legendary set.

TIL rocket scientist Dr. Wernher von Braun wrote a science fiction novel in 1949 called Project Mars: A Technical Tale. The novel takes place in the 1980s and is about the first human mission to Mars and their encounter with benevolent Martians on the planet, including the Martian leader, Elon.

TIL that the Apollo 11 landing site was chosen purely for technical and safety reasons, which is why the famous footage takes place on a mostly featureless plain. Later Apollo missions landed in valleys, next to canyons, and at the foot of mountains.

TIL: Turkish Airlines had an Airbus A340-300 that was nicknamed “Deli Mike” (“Crazy Mike” in Turkish) due to its record of odd & harmless technical issues that persisted even after repairs, such as turning lights on randomly (and off again on its own, as if it knew when the pilots were intervening).
