TIL the city of Sodo in Ethiopia only gets up to 57F (14C) average temperatures in the summer despite being near the equator because of its location in the Ethiopian Highlands. The city’s highest point is roughly 1700 ft higher than Denver.

TIL about Han Purple, a synthetic pigment used in ancient China, incl on the Terracotta Army. Use stopped in ~220 AD and it was rediscovered in 1990s. It was found that in very low temperatures and high pressure, it “loses” a dimension, acts as a 2D material, and is useful in quantum computing.

TIL when there’s less solar radiation, temperatures on Earth go up. This is because there’s less solar magnetic shielding against cosmic rays, so radioactive carbon-14 in the atmosphere goes up. Evidence of this is trees contained more carbon-14 during the last Medieval Warm Period.

TIL blood oranges get their color from the pigment anthocyanin. This pigment needs low nightly temperatures to form. Anthocyanin is not commonly found in a majority of citrus fruits.

TIL of Ushuaia, Argentina, the southernmost city in the world. Despite it’s latitude and being adjacent to a glacier, winters are actually very mild with typical temperatures no lower that of some populated parts of the Scottish Highlands.
