TIL musician Frank Zappa’s father worked at the Aberdeen Proving Ground where chemical weapons were tested. The family had to store gas masks in the house. This led to Zappa’s work frequently referencing biological warfare, disease, and the defense industry.

TIL that 13 innocent men were exonerated because of lab technician Mary Jane Burton’s habit, dating back to 1977, of scotch taping small samples of tested evidence to her lab records, even though doing so violated the official policy to destroy all evidence after it was tested.

TIL: US Consumer Reports published an investigation showing that 23 out of 28 dark chocolate bars it had tested from famous brands contained concerning levels of lead and cadmium, which causes long term damage to the body including: bone fragility, kidney & lung damage, pregnancy issues, etc.

TIL the ending of “The Bourne Supremacy” was reshot just two weeks before its release. Director Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon came up with a new idea that would cost $200,000 and involve pulling Damon from the set of Ocean’s 12. The movie tested 10 points higher with the new ending and made $176m.

TIL about the “catapult-able cockpit”, created by Romanian inventor Anastase Dragomir and successfully tested in 1929 at the Paris-Orly Airport, which featured a parachuted chair that was ejected from an aircraft. It was the first modern layout for an ejection seat, later perfected during WWII.

TIL about the only double barrel cannon in the world. When it was its first tested during the American Civil War, the chain snapped immediately and one ball tore into a nearby cabin, knocking down its chimney; the other spun off erratically and struck a nearby cow, killing it instantly.
