TIL about the Qianli chuan (‘thousand league boat’), a human powered paddle wheel boat invented in the late 5th century AD during the Southern Qi Dynasty. The boats were able to cruise hundreds of kilometers per day with by humans peddling them. They were used as war ships and tug boats.

TIL that the Farallon Islands, off the coast of San Francisco, California, has the highest rodent density of any island in the world, with over a thousand mice per acre. Visitors to the islands can, at times, see the ground moving when the mice are burrowing their underground tunnels.

TIL In 1014, Byzantine Emperor Basil II captured several thousand Bulgarian soldiers, put them into groups of 100, and blinded 99 in every group. The last soldiers had only one eye gouged out and were ordered to lead their blind friends home. Upon seeing this, Tsar Samuel died of a heart attack.
