TIL about the Shepard Tone. An audio illusion that creates the feeling of consistent, never-ending rising/falling. The illusion is achieved by playing overlapping notes that are one octave apart. In this way, the sensation of rising or descending notes never ends.

TIL CBS was fined $272,000 because Young Sheldon misused the Emergency Alert System tone signals in an episode showing a tornado warning, which is illegal to use outside a real warning, and since the EAS was made in 1997 while Young Sheldon takes place in the early 90s, this usage was anachronistic

TIL The Big Ben’s unique tone is because the bell had cracked in 1859, barely two months after its inauguration. The bell is since oriented in such a way the hammer doesn’t strike the ‘crack’

TIL the iconic Motown bassist James Jamerson never replaced strings on his bass unless a string broke. He did not take much care of the instrument, saying: “The dirt keeps the funk”. When the neck warped, making it harder to fret, he said it improved the tone.

TIL of the Mosquito machine and ringtone. The machine emits a high-pitched buzz that drives away loiterers and can be tuned to be heard only by teens. The ringtone, created by sampling the machine tone, uses the same buzz to make phones ring without being heard by teachers or another adults.
