TIL that the British once tried to destroy an entire island after WW2 because they didn’t want it to be used as a fleet base for the Germans. This was done in “Operation Big Bang” where they detonated 6700 tonnes of explosives, which is considered one of the largest single explosive detonation.

TIL Pringles are made with a mixture of 1/3 water to 2/3 potato flakes and cornstarch, the mixture is then pressed and rolled into a thin sheet with 4 tonnes of pressure. A cutter punches an oval shape in the sheet and the scrap dough is separated and recycled back into the chip-making process

TIL The most successful submarine captain of all time, was Lothar von Arnauld de la Perière. He only fired 74 torpedos, with 39 hits, but during his career sank 194 ships, totalling 453,000 tonnes.

TIL the 1988 Camelford Water Disaster was the UK’s worst mass poisoning event. Twenty tonnes of aluminium sulphate was accidentally added to the water supply, leading thousands to become sick. Inquests on people who died many years later found very high levels of aluminium in the brain.

TIL the Mausoleum of Theodoric in Ravenna, Italy, was built in 520 AD with stones sourced from a quarry in Istria, approximately 400 kilometres (249 mi) away by land journey. The mausoleum’s roof consists of a single Istrian carved stone 10 metres (33 ft) in diameter weighing 230 tonnes
