TIL while the UK’s blockade of Africa was largely successful in stopping the Atlantic Slave Trade, the United States was a long-term hold-out and refused permission for the British to search their ships for slaves. Because of this, many slavers flew fake American flags to continue the trade.

TIL it was theorized through the 19th century that the Arctic Ocean got warmer as it got closer to the North Pole. The “Open Polar Sea” could provide trade routes through an equator-like temperate climate to Asia, Europe, and the Americas. It was disproven by dozens of failed expeditions.

TIL that when Joseph Stalin’s son Yakov was captured in WW2, Stalin imprisoned Yakov’s wife as punishment and refused to trade him for a captured German officer, quipping ‘I will not trade a marshal for a lieutenant’.

TIL that amphetamines’ first clinical use was to relieve nasal congestion, under the trade name Benzedrine in 1934. It is now used in the treatment of ADHD and narcolepsy among other uses.

TIL about Ron Clifford, a man who survived the 9/11 attacks after his business meeting was moved to the World Trade Center. In a tragic coincidence, Ron’s sister Ruth and her 4-year old daughter Juliana were both on American Airlines Flight 175, the plane that hit the South Tower.

TIL the hymn ‘Amazing Grace’ was written by an ex-slave ship captain and slave trader. After finding Christianity later in life he turned his back on the trade and became a prominent supporter of abolitionism. He was also held as a slave himself before escaping.
