TIL the pinkypromise has been used in the US since at least the 1860’s. One possible origin of this traditional promise is Japan, where it is known as ‘yubikiri’, meaning “finger cut-off”. Supposedly, people in Japan believed that if you break a pinky promise, you have to cut off your pinky finger.

TIL: USS Fomalhaut was launched 25 January 1941 by Pennsylvania Shipyards, Inc., Beaumont, Tex., as Cape Lookout, a Type C1 ship cargo ship. The launch used 7,000 pounds of ripe bananas, which the US Maritime Commission found to be an “efficient substitute” for traditional launching grease.

TIL that traditional lacquer is made w urushiol sap, aka the rash-causing toxin in poison ivy & poison oak. In fact, “urushi” (as in “urushi-ol”) is the Japanese for the Chinese lacquer tree (also toxic) & an English word for lacquerware. They all fall in the genus Toxicodendron, or “poison tree”.
