TIL In 1629 the English seized almost all of France’s territories in North America. The seizure became a legal issue because Quebec surrendered after the peace treaty was already signed, and ultimately the territories were returned in exchange for Louis XIII paying his wife’s dowry.

TIL that in 1985 the mayors of Rome and Carthage signed a peace treaty formally ending the Punic Wars, more than 2000 years after Carthage was destroyed by Roman general Scipio Aemilianus.

TIL The Outer Space Treaty and COSPAR require that space exploration does not expose the earth to extraterrestrial contaminations. Additionally extraterrestrials cannot be exposed to contaminants from earth, so spacecrafts and lander have to be sterilized before going to other planets.

TIL the Ottawa Convention is a 1997 treaty signed by 133 countries to ban antipersonnel land mines. The U.S. never signed. The U.S. placed thousands of mines in the DMZ between the Koreas during the Cold War to help deter an overwhelming ground invasion from the North.

TIL l South Yorkshire town of Doncaster is technically part of Scotland. Its Scottish history dates way back to the 12th century (1136, to be specific), when the town was signed over to King David I in the Treaty of Durham, and it was never officially given back.

TIL that the Korean War never ended. Although the fighting between North and South Korea and their respective allies ended in July 1953 when the Korean Armistice Agreement was signed, no peace treaty was ever signed, and the two Koreas are technically still at war, engaged in a frozen conflict.

TIL that in 1883, the tiny community of Lijar in Spain declared war against France for insulting the Spanish king. They declared peace 1983 after negotiating a peace treaty, and no actual fighting ever took place.

TIL In 1870 President Grant tried to pass a treaty to annex the Dominican Republic. Mainly it would expand American influence and unofficially provide a refuge for southern blacks seeking refuge from persecution. Despite support from the Dominican Republic, the treaty was defeated in the Senate.

TIL: in 1964 the U.S. ceded land to Mexico. A boundary dispute caused by the changing course of the Rio Grande near El Paso was resolved by the Chamizal Treaty which ceded land north of the river to Mexico and some Mexican land to the U.S. They agreed to rechannel the river so it won’t happen again.

TIL that after WWI, Germany was forced to pay reparations that totaled $269 billion in today’s money. The debt was so crushing that they made their last payment on October 3, 2010, 92 years after the Treaty of Versailles.
