TIL the Tsar Bell has been destroyed in fires twice. The current version is the largest bell in the world, and has never been rung. However, students at UC Berkeley simulated it’s ring in 2016.

TIL that the first Romanov tsar, Michael I, became tsar as a teenager while in exile. The last Romanov heir, his descendant Alexei, died as a teenager while in exile.

TIL In 1014, Byzantine Emperor Basil II captured several thousand Bulgarian soldiers, put them into groups of 100, and blinded 99 in every group. The last soldiers had only one eye gouged out and were ordered to lead their blind friends home. Upon seeing this, Tsar Samuel died of a heart attack.

When he asked Grand Duke Nicholas, a respected commander, to become dictator, the nobleman drew a pistol and threatened to shoot himself in the head if the Tsar further refused the reforms

TIL of Tsar Simeon II who became King of Bulgaria aged 6 before being overthrown by the Soviet Union during WW2, he was then democratically elected Prime Minister of Bulgaria in 2001. He is the only living ex-Tsar and one of two former monarchs to ever be democratically elected head of government

TIL the Tsar Bomba, the largest ever nuclear bomb detonated, was originally designed to yield 100 megatons. However, Sakharov was very apprehensive about the amount of radiation it would create, and therefore replaced the bombs innovative uranium layers with lead, halving the size of the blast.
