TIL that the morning after the Titanic sank, a man on a nearby vessel who was unaware of the sinking photographed an iceberg with a red streak he suspected to be paint from a ship. For years the law firm for White Star Line, the Titanic’s owner, had the original displayed in their office.

TIL about the Montevideo Maru, a Japanese naval ship sunk in 1942 by a U.S. submarine whose crew was unaware it was carrying over a thousand prisoners of war. It remains Australia’s worst-ever maritime disaster, and the wreck was discovered only last week.

TIL Painting Easter eggs was first recorded in the 13th century. The church banned the eating of eggs during Holy Week (the week before Easter). Unaware of the ban, chickens continued laying eggs during this week, which were decorated rather than consumed.

TIL The US military sprayed 73 million liters of Agent Orange on Vietnam and was originally called Operation Hades. US soldiers, unaware of the dangers, sometimes showered in the empty 55-gallon drums, used them to store food, and repurposed them as barbecue pits.

TIL Nitrious Oxide also known as laughing gas or nitrous is a common recreational drug that most users are unaware of its neurotoxicity. Beginning in 1799 in British upper class circles they had laughing gas parties. Cannister littering is also a byproduct of its recreation and a common complaint.

TIL Anti-Video Game Activist Jack Thompson wrote an open letter titled “A Modest Video Game Proposal” in 2005, in which he offered a $10,000 charity donation if someone made a game that allowed the players to kill video game developers. He was unaware Postal 2 already did this two years before.

TIL Sexsomnia, also called sleep sex, is a disorder in which sleeping people engage in sexual behaviors such as masturbation or initiating sex with another person. Even if their eyes open and they make sexual noises, they are truly asleep and unaware of their behavior once they are awake.
