TIL that in 1931 the USSR sold off many of the Hermitage’s most important artworks (which they considered elitist decadence) to fund industrialization. Under Andrew Mellon, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. acquired 21 of them, creating one of the best ensembles of art in the Americas.

TIL the West Virginia town of Vulcan couldn’t get any funds to repair a failing bridge during the Cold War so they wrote to the USSR and requested aid. Once someone from the Soviet Union came out to survey, the State government then passed legislation to have funds to repair the bridge.

TIL Boris Mikhailov, captain of the USSR hockey team, was offered a $1 million contract to leave Russia in 1980 after the Miracle on Ice. However, he declined as the KGB was standing next to him when the offer was made.

TIL that in 2008, Cuba lifted its ban on the sale of consumer electrical appliances. The ban had been brought on due to the collapse of the USSR in 1991 depriving Cuba of subsidies and oil, resulting in an energy crunch and rolling blackouts.
