TIL of Byron Looper, a Tennessee politician known for both changing his middle name to “(Low Tax)” as a vote-winning stunt and, during a Tennessee state senate race, assassinating his opponent. In the election, held a month later, he still received 1,531 votes.

TIL that the Baltimore Ravens name is from the poem ‘The Raven’ by Edgar Allen Poe who lived and died in Baltimore. In 1996 residents of Baltimore were polled on a name for their new NFL team and Ravens won by an overwhelming 21,108 votes. The Americans and Marauders were a distant second and third.

TIL that the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC, UK) conducted an online naming poll for a polar research vessel. The name “Boaty McBoatface ” was the runaway winner of the poll with 124,109 votes.

TIL that Kanepi, a small town in Estonia, has a cannabis leaf as its flag’s symbol. The town council let community members vote for the new flag, including the pot leaf symbol as an option. 12,000 of the 15,000 votes went to the pot leaf despite Kanepi being a town of fewer than 5,000.

TIL: the Vice President of the United States was determined by the 2nd most electoral votes (the runner up for presidential ticket). This stopped when Jefferson and Burr ran against each other (1800).

TIL that whilst he ultimately lost the 1896 Presidential Election, 36 year old William Jennings Bryan became the youngest person in American History to win an electoral vote, winning 176 of the 447 Electoral Votes at the time.

TIl that according to Guinness and the head of the Liberian National Elections Commission, the 1927 general election was one of the most rigged elections in recorded history, with the victor getting 240,000 votes, or 96%, despite there being fewer than 15,000 registered voters.
