TIL XMM-Newton, an X-ray space observatory launched by the ESA in 1999 tasked with investigating interstellar Xray sources, performing narrow and broadrange spectroscopy, and imaging of objects in both Xray and optical wavelengths. Funded for 2yrs, with a 10yr design life, is still in good health.

TIL that, since the ovaries and fallopian tubes are not actually connected, it’s normal for substances entering the uterus to spill out into the abdominal cavity at the mouths of the fallopian tubes. This includes semen, but also X-Ray contrast dye – and it’s used diagnostically.

TIL Wilhelm Röntgen discovered X-rays in Nov, 1895. The very next month, he took the first X-ray image using his wife’s hand; 2 months after that, X-rays were being used in multiple hospitals across the globe. By May, Thomas Edison developed the first mass-produced X-ray imaging device.

TIL starting in the 1920s, shoe stores commonly had fluoroscope (X-ray) machines to check the fit of feet in shoes. The last of these were banned in the late 70s due to increased awareness of health risks from radiation.

TIL that in the 1890s, X-Rays were used extensively as entertainment. People could even buy or build their own X-ray apparatus for use at home. Many who popularized the technology developed cancer, suffered amputations, or died.

TIL that in 1929, determined to prove his hypothesis, Werner Frossman tricked a nurse, inserted a catheter through his own arm, and walked with the inserted tube to an x-ray lab to photograph his discovery, thereby inventing cardiac catheterization and winning a Nobel Prize for it later.
