TIL about the infamous Ash Wednesday bushfires that ravaged the states of South Australia and Victoria on the 16th of February 1983. The fires burnt 3 million acres in a single day claiming a total of 75 lives and a total insurance cost of $324 million. ($1.16 billion adjusted for inflation)

40 years ago today.
The memories of this fire are forever etched, despite being only 10 at the time.
Glowing embers were falling from the sky more than 20 miles away from the fires, over the ocean. I burnt my fingertips picking one up…
Remember that day my now wife had everything except there house burnt they lost cars and machinery and the people just down the road did not survive. Bit hard to forget that stuff.
