TIL Bob Hoover, an American Spitfire pilot in WW2, was shot down over occupied France and captured but was able to escape from the POW camp 16 months later, steal a German fighter, and fly it from northern Germany to friendly territory in Holland.

Wow. My grandma recently passed away at 97. Lived a good long life. She had an older brother who flew planes during WW2 and unfortunately died during the war in Santa Ana, CA after getting hit by a drunk driver. Every time my grandma would see a plane above her. She would tell everyone to waive to Junior. The only picture I ever saw of Junior was with Bob Hoover.
