TIL despite their strength and size, elephant’s backs are not designed to carry weight as their bones actually extend upwards. This puts their spine at risk of ‘caving in’ when used for work like tourist rides. Left, ex-riding ele with caved-in back; Right, normal dome-shaped back.

Interesting but actually really sad. Such a waste to see amazing animals like these reduced to being kept in captivity to give tourist rides..
Every time I see someone share a touristy photo of themselves on an elephant or patting a clearly drugged animal I feel disgusted honestly
