TIL in 1947 Raytheon built the first commercially available microwave oven. It weighed 750 pounds, was water-cooled and cost about US$5,000 ($61,000 in 2021 dollars).

Thank you, defense company, for making it so easy for my lazy ass to heat up chili at 3 in the morning.
I remember reading something a couple of decades ago about the first commercially used microwave was very large and used to dry and treat wood for Louisville Slugger baseball bats. 🙂 Not sure if this is true to be honest.
