TIL in 2010, Washington D.C. held a mock election and invited hackers to test its online voting system. They managed to elect Master Control Program from “Tron” as mayor, Skynet from “Terminator” to Congress, and Bender from “Futurama” to the school board. It took D.C. officials two days to notice.

  1. someone approved a Fountain of the Planet of the Apes in Queens in the late 60’s thinking some one would catch it and object before it was built and dedicated. As of the early 2000’s the fountain was still there.

  2. I didn’t read the article, but I’ve read something similar ways back. The article implied that some of those ‘invitations’ (also location is important) are pretty much recruiting tools for government agencies, the likes of the US military, CIA or NSA.
