TIL Keanu Reeves runs a private charitable foundation that provides aid to cancer research and a couple of children’s hospitals. In a 2009 interview with Ladies Home Journal, he said, “I don’t like to attach my name to it, I just let the foundation do what it does.”

  1. Keep hearing stories like this about what a great guy he is. There’s even a youtube video about all the nice things he’s done for people. Someone has a video of his giving up his seat on the subway for a woman. Pretty classy, K. Modesty is sorely lacking in “look at me” Hollywood. People could learn from this guy.

  2. Rarely does this world produce a human being that is genuinely a good person plus has the means to influence so many in a positive way. Keanu Reeves is one of those people. I’m not sure I have ever read or seen anything negative about him in any way. More than that, in a world full of so many shit heads, he does so much good on a small and large scale.

  4. Great man, and It’s called character. I grew up just like that, don’t boast, let your deeds speak for themselves, don’t make a big deal about shiit. Many famous artists do this but of course we don’t know or it comes up in an article on the DL.

  5. I’m not impugning Reeves at all for this–it’s his money and his choice. I’d probably choose the same thing if I was a rich person.

    But it being called the Keanu Reeves Foundation for Cancer Research would probably attract other funders and create a bigger impact. For example, [the DiCaprio Foundation](https://stage.leonardodicaprio.org/) definitely has a bigger footprint because his name is attached.

  6. You might be a celebrity who has contributed to variety of charities.

    When you give to a charity publicly with your name attached, from that moment going forward your phone and every possible contact is filled with communications from other charities. The volume of charities out there in need of funding is overwhelming.

    For this reason, charitable givings are almost always done anonymously.

    Else, near every celebrity when approached will tell you they have a single charity they contribute to as a polite way not to be overwhelmed by phone calls.
