TIL Nazi General Loringhoven was inside the Führerbunker during the last days of Nazi Germany. He attempted to escape, was captured by Allied forces, and later became a NATO commander, retiring as Inspector General of the Armed Forces of West Germany in 1973.

Going by the article, he was only a major in 1945, so he was small fry. He became a general after joining the Bundeswehr in 1956.
That’s basically post WWII German history in a nutshell. Only the worst of the worst nazis were executed, the rest continued to live and work as if they had done nothing wrong.
Well a former Hitler youth was made Pope. Go figure.
