TIL of the Mosquito machine and ringtone. The machine emits a high-pitched buzz that drives away loiterers and can be tuned to be heard only by teens. The ringtone, created by sampling the machine tone, uses the same buzz to make phones ring without being heard by teachers or another adults.

In reality most adults could hear it because the octave was still not high pitched enough to be not noticed.
Teen repellant. It’s like the anti-Axe-body-spray.
Yeah, in reality it just annoys enough adults to make this largely useless.
Im 50 and this is my ringtone, I can hear it still. I use it for the same reason, I want to hear when my phone goes off, but be stealthy about it. I forget about it until when I’m around teens… When they hear it and I explain, they Freak Out!
We used this in school all the time for text and phone calls. Works great during tests.
