TIL proper French grammar was long considered a privilege of the elite. In 1901, a push to simplify spelling to make it more accessible was defeated for political reasons. Working class youths had to be prevented from acquiring the same command of the language as the elites.

Well, French is easy to spell out phonetically. For example, “oh” is spelled “eaux”…

Not much different today. How many people just chuck a CV after reading the cover-letter and find spelling/grammar errors? Is it really that important to some jobs? Never bet against humanity’s ability to classify and separate people into arbitrary groups to build and retain power structures. Why not simplify the tax code? Same reason.
I too read that article about the gardner convicted of murder in France…
This is a trend that’s visible in almost all aspects of modern society.
