TIL that Elephant Seals were thought to be extinct by 1884. In 1892 an expedition from the Smithsonian found what could have been the last 8 individuals on Guadalupe Island of which the expedition killed 7 for their collection.

  1. Seems as thought,according to the wiki link, both the Southern and Northern Elephant Seals are categorised as Least Concern.

    Thankfully they seemed to have bounced back.

    Note to self, don’t be a collector of living this for curiosity or there won’t be any left to collect!
