TIL that in the 15th century, England created a “Court of Requests” specifically to provide faster and more affordable law cases for the poor. It became unpopular with the regular courts and lawyers because it was so much faster and cheaper. One source says that Richard III founded it.

If you like a good novel about this era I recommend CJ Sansom’s ‘Shardlake’ series. He’s a lawyer that both works at the Court of Requests and is a fixer for Thomas Cromwell, Henry VIII’s chief minister.
Nothing has changed. We still have the best justice “Money can buy”…and screw the little guy.
