TIL that Martin Luther King Jr.’s real name was Michael King Jr. His father went on a worldwide trip in 1934 that ended in Berlin, and he saw sites associated with the Reformation leader Martin Luther. He began referring to himself and his son as Martin Luther. MLK Jr. never legally changed his name

Interestingly enough, Protestant reformer Martin Luther was born Martin Luder. The Greek root of his Latin based name, Eleutherius, which he actually switched to for a while, better rhymes with the ‘ooth’ sound. Eventually, though, he shortened it to how history remembers him… Luther.
