TIL that the biggest medieval Codex known as Codex Gigas is said to have been written only within 24 hours by a monk with the help of the devil in a desperate attempt to save himself. As a thank you, it is said that he drew a large picture of the devil which can still be seen today at Stockholm.

    In tests to recreate the work, it is estimated that reproducing only the calligraphy, without the illustrations or embellishments, would have taken twenty years of non-stop writing.

    That’s a lot of quills and ink and probably a fatal case of carpal tunnel.
