TIL that the origins of the “universal S” are unknown. Even a youtuber who spent 5 years researching it couldn’t come to a conclusion. The symbol appeared in some places as far as a century ago, and is belived to have spread worldwide before the internet, but it is unclear how or why.

Well, if a youtoober searching for 5 years cant solve it…must be like the Sphinx or Jack the Ripper.
It’s easy to doodle on graph paper. That was how I started doing it in the early 90s

It looks like it could stem from these Nordic knot-drawings – they have these braid-patterns, so y knot?
Everyone in class at one point would doodle this on their notebooks and such… I always wondered what the big deal was like did it just look cool or represent something for them? Now it turns out no one knows….
3d image it and rotate it and you find it’s not a S but a simplified Mobius strip (infinity symbol). 😜
