TIL the character Khan Noonien Singh from ‘Star Trek’ was named after Kim Noonien Singh, a pilot Gene Roddenberry served with during World War II, and had lost touch with. Roddenberry hoped that Singh’s similar name might attract his attention and renew his old acquaintance.

Data’s inventor, Dr. Noonien Soong, was also named after him, for the same reason. The plan didn’t work however: he never heard from Kim Noonien Singh again.

They may have attempted to contact him but were most likely turned away by production staff.
