TIL The painting The Gate of Calais (1748) features the artist, William Hogarth, about to be arrested. This is included in the painting since Hogarth was arrested in Calais because his sketching was mistaken for espionage.

  1. I mean frankly, fair enough, the Seven Years War was just seven years away, the War of the Austrian Succession had just ended, I can understand the local guard being a little jumpy about a foreigner drawing the fortifications of a fairly major port city
