It makes up for the loss of Yahoo Answers.
For simpler, easy to answer questions, definitely not the right place.
Also, a lot of people are pedantic and contrarians and it gives them some kind of satisfying feeling of superiority when they engage in pedantry. They refuse to take people at face value and ignore the mistakes in the questions and focus on adding to the discussion.

r/ask is for more specific questions
r/AskReddit is for questions that aren’t simple yes or no and encourage long interesting answers
To stop people asking stuff they can easily use Google for, or to provide questions that entertain discussion rather than a simple yes or no
Idk but I end up deleting my answers because they make me feel stupid at times
