TIL a bouncing bomb is a bomb designed to bounce to a target across water in a manner to avoid obstacles such as torpedo nets, and to allow both the bomb’s speed on arrival at the target and the timing of its detonation to be pre-determined, in a similar fashion to a regular naval depth charge.

  1. There is a great old film called “The Dambusters” all about how these bombs were developed and used during WW2. This clip from the film shows the bombing raid, and towards the end of the clip they used actual footage of one of these bombs skipping across a lake after being dropped. It’s pretty cool!

  2. I think I also remember this from mythbusters as well. Awesome bit of effective low tech. Just trying to imagine the first person to suggest this to their superiors. “So we take this depth charge and instead of dropping it straight down we skip that fucker right into a god damn dam.”
