TIL a popular tale about the origin of the americano coffee drink is that American GIs stationed in Italy during WWII found espressos too bitter and cappuccinos too heavy compared to dip-brewed coffee from back home, so Italian baristas topped the espresso with hot water to make it more palatable

Went to Italy once, and asked for an americano, as I wanted a lot of coffee, not the spit they use on the ristretto. Damn, worst coffee ever.
Uh was it not that the GIs wanted to be able to relax for a while with a larger beverage so they asked for hot water on the side?
