TIL about Abul-Abbas. An elephant sent by the caliph Harun al-rashid ibn Muhammad al-Mahdi to the holy Roman emperor Charlemagne as a gift that symbolized the beginning of Abbasid-Carolingian relations. The elephant died in 810 just as charlemagne crossed the rhine.

   Harun al-rashid got up to all kinds of wacky shit from founding the greatest library in the medieval world (until the mongols came along) to causing a decline of a powerful Iranian family that once had their monastery visited by xuanzang himself to being featured in the thousand and one nights.
