TIL about PERV (Porcine Endogenous Retrovirus), a virus embedded in the gene of pigs. It has been studied as a risk factor in pig-to-human transplants.

Heh, perv.
I thought my bacon tasted a little skeevy this morning…
PERV became recently relevant due to the [first successful pig-to-human heart transplant](https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-022-00111-9). From what I could find it seems that the heart transplanted there still carries the virus, however there are already plans to eliminate it from future donor pigs through further gene editing.
