TIL about Raoul Whitfield, one of the earliest American hardboiled detective fiction writers. Close friends with Dashiell Hammett, he was briefly married to New York socialite Emily Davies Vanderbilt Thayer and created the character Jo Gar, a Spanish-Filipino detective in Manila.
