TIL about Sunflower Syndrome. A poorly understood type of epilepsy, sufferers are drawn to seeking out and looking at bright light (including the sun). This results in a brief hand-waving gesture across the face, or eye-flickering seizure up to hundreds of times a day.

  1. I work at a school and noticed a young girl repeatedly, briefly looking up at the sun today. When I advised that she stop because she’d hurt her eyes, she told me all about her condition. I checked her records to ensure she was telling me the truth and yep, Sunflower Syndrome was listed.

  2. There used to be an individual that I worked with that would constantly stare at the sun and have those eye flickering seizures. Never knew it had a name!!! We had to get him to wear sunglasses outside. He was autistic as well.Going to Google it now. Thanks!
