TIL about the Crittenden Compromise, a proposal to enshrine slavery to the U. S. Constitution and make it unconstitutional for future congresses to end slavery. Opposed by Abraham Lincoln and rejected by the House and Senate, it failed to avert the Civil War.

  1. You mean radicalized political zealots wouldn’t accept the the decisions of their government if they didn’t agree with them, and this started a civil war?

    Man, good thing something like that couldn’t happen today, what with people being more civilized and reasonable.
