TIL about The Lost Battalion of WW1. Wherein soldiers of the US 77th Div. launched an attack in the Argonne forest under the idea that they were being supported by French on the left and more US on the right. Ally support was stalled and the 77th pushed their attack so far that they were cut off.

Overflow Information:
The 77th had pushed so deep into enemy lines that the Germans were able to counter attack from all sides. Usage of mortar fine, grenades and rifle fire was used on the trapped ally forces. To try and help the allies at base launched mortar fire on their rough position but stopped when a carrier pigeon was sent out with the message “We are along the road parallel to 276.4. Our own artillery is dropping a barrage directly on us. For heaven’s sake stop it.”
Yep and the supplies drop missed and ended up on german controlled grounds.
Far from their land as they made their stand
They stood strong and the legend still lives on
