TIL after Steve Martin hosted SNL for the first time, his father published a negative review in a local realtor newsletter he worked at, saying, “his performance did nothing to further his career.”

I just learned about this in Steve Martin’s wonderful book Born Standing Up. I listened to the audiobook with Martin’s fun delivery, banjo playing and all. He had a complicated relationship with his father. In this negative SNL review, Martin thought his dad wrote it to show his friends he didn’t agree with SNL, later saying SNL was the worst. His dad was obviously very wrong. I whole heartedly recommend the book, especially if you’re a comedy nerd.
Side note – Steve Martin’s father died choking on crow.
