TIL Anti-littering legislation date back to ancient Greece, a marker on the island of Paros has the inscription “whoever drops their litter on the street owes 51 drachmae to whoever wishes to claim them”. In modernity cigarette butts are the most littered item, with 4.5 trillion discarded each year.

  1. It drives me absolutely insane watching people drop cigarette butts. It’s even crazier that most of them would never even think about littering with anything else, but somehow, their cigarette butt is fine.

  2. The only good thing that ever came from decades of cigarette smoking is that society has learned that without any doubt, smoking cigs is bad all the way around in every way possible. Don’t get me wrong, I’m absolutely not anti-tobacco. Pure unadulterated tobacco leaf is special and has a place in ritual, ceremonial, or recreational use.

    Cigarettes are nearly the opposite of pure tobacco leaf. Perfectly engineered addiction sticks that sink their claws DEEP and never let go without an epic battle of wits, will, and endurance. Fucking evil. I cant believe it was allowed to happen how it did. It’s similar to the evil difference between pure cocaine and crack cocaine. Cocaine comes with risk of course but crack is pure evil.
