TIL as Alex Trebek was not able to retire on his own terms, one of the final phone calls he made was to Ken Jennings regarding taking over the hosting duties of “Jeopardy!”. Trebek passed away the same weekend as this call, having hosted his final shows less than two weeks prior to his death.

IIRC, Alex Trebek had a real affinity for Ken, so much so that he asked him to narrate portions of the audiobook version of his memoir since he was not physically able to complete the recordings during his chemotherapy treatment. Little things like that are hints that Trebek clearly wanted Ken to be the ambassador of the show. Of course, obvious to everybody but the people who own and run Jeopardy.
