TIL Ciabatta bread was created in 1982 by Arnaldo Cavallari, a miller who wanted to give Italy its own bread to stop baguette imports from France that threatened to monopolize the lucrative sandwich market in Italy.

Thanks God… Italy had suffered for centuries of gastronomic and cultural breadlessness before this. Finally, finally Italy had a bread to call its own.
