TIL: Diving too deep in water increases the nitrogen concentration in your blood and will make you feel drunk and confused. Adding Helium to a SCUBA tank will reduce this because unlike nitrogen, helium does not have a narcotic effect.

Nitrogen narcosis is crazy. I had a friend that was diving in Greece in the early 90s had one of his dive party get it. He said it was the scariest shit he ever saw. He said this guy just started swimming down. They tried to catch him but he got so deep that they had to stop. Said he still has nightmares about it.
My dad had a fun story about this, thankfully who he was diving with recognized him getting loopy and started to make him ascend before he passed out
Anybody hear about the time the President, then Lyndon Johnson, spoke to an Astronaut who had been underwater for like a month testing something. Anyways, the President called him while he was in a helium environment instead of nitrogen, for this reason I think. But I don’t believe they gave Lyndon a heads up. There’s audio.
