TIL from 1844-1958 there was a statue in front of the Capitol Building depicting Christopher Columbus holding the world in the palm of his hand while a native american woman cowers in front of him. The statue was removed in the 1950s after protests from native americans and is currently in storage.

Columbus, while important in history, has no place for celebration. I say Italian-Americans get a do-over. Let the pick someone or something to have a big party over. They can pick Sofia Loren or Galileo or gelato. And we’ll pick up the party from there.
