TIL: In 1785 part of now-Tennessee seceded from then-North Carolina and petitioned to become the 14th state – the State of Franklin. It was two votes shy, as the Articles of Confederation required 2/3rds approval. It would have passed under the Constitution (eff. 1789) which only requires a majority

I forget what it’s called but there’s a book out there that details all the almost-states that could have existed in the US. Obviously Franklin is included but apparently there were quite a few others.
Some business use “State of Franklin” in their names in that area.
I thought you couldn’t make new states from land that belonged to existing states? Doesn’t the state being left behind have to agree?
