TIL in the 19th century Britain was the world’s richest and most advanced economy. Real GDP per person almost doubled in the 90 years between 1780 and 1870, when it reached $3263 per capita. This was one third greater than GDP per person in the USA, and 70% more than both France and Germany.

  1. At the height of the British Empire children in the North of England were going down coalmines barefoot earning pennies to keep their siblings alive. That is to say nothing of the atrocities inflicted upon the colonial peoples. The riches of Victoria’s Empire were enjoyed by a privileged few.
