Yeah well they were literally putting newborn girls in the river back then… guess nobody thought that far ahead.
It’s a little worse than that, the Central government found that they had over counted their population by over 100 million. The situation is pretty bad since their population is aging rapidly and the 996 lifestyle is suppressing the birthrate even further.
More like many families kill their girls either by abortion or after birth because sons are “more valuable” to the family.

Well China does have child limit (the amount of children u can have). So that probably affected it
Wasn’t there also a lot of stigma about having a girl? IIRC having a boy was seen as more valuable than having a girl. If you found out the baby is a girl you’d give up on that pregnancy and try again for a boy. A boy would bring “more value” to the household, and testing for gender + aborting girl pregnancies was common.
I hope things will level up again and this old view gets changed.
