  1. It’s a little worse than that, the Central government found that they had over counted their population by over 100 million. The situation is pretty bad since their population is aging rapidly and the 996 lifestyle is suppressing the birthrate even further.

  2. Wasn’t there also a lot of stigma about having a girl? IIRC having a boy was seen as more valuable than having a girl. If you found out the baby is a girl you’d give up on that pregnancy and try again for a boy. A boy would bring “more value” to the household, and testing for gender + aborting girl pregnancies was common.

    I hope things will level up again and this old view gets changed.
