TIL it is widely believed the US Armed Forces never adopted the rank of Field Marshall, opting for the five-star “General of the Army” instead, because George Marshall was the first person promoted to the rank and “Marshall Marshall” sounded undignified.

I personally knew a Major Major, and I think Marshall Marshall would have been just fine.
It’s gets weirder still because it would have been Marshal Marshall. He probably knew everyone would make the same spelling error you did. 🙂

They should’ve gone with using first names for Field Marshalls. Marshall George would’ve been great!
